[[Category:Email]]
==Overview==
The CSEE mail servers use a secure connection for incoming and outgoing mail; so you will need to customize your mail client in order to read and send e-mail on your CSEE account. This page explains how to configure your e-mail client for the CSEE Mail Services. This page will discuss Thunderbird and Microsoft Outlook If you use a different client, please refer to your client's documentation. You will need to set up your client for the following services:

{| border="1" align="center" class="prettytable"
! '''Service'''
! '''Server name'''
! '''Port'''
|-
|Secure IMAP
|imap.cs.umbc.edu
|993
|-
|Secure POP
|imap.cs.umbc.edu
|995
|-
|Secure SMTP
|smtp.cs.umbc.edu
|25
|}
==Thunderbird (Windows/MacOS/Linux)==

#If you have no email accounts configured the 'New Account' dialog will automatically open. [[:File:Thunderbird-1.png|[1]]]
If you already have accounts in Thunderbird and are simply adding CSEE mail to Thunderbird open the 'New Account' dialog by clicking on the 3 horizontal bars (menu button) and select 'Preferences' -> 'Account Settings...' then 'Account Options' -> 'Add Mail Account' [[:File:Thunderbird-2.png|[2]]]
#Fill in your name, csee username and your password. Thunderbird will attempt to automatically detect the proper settings, but it will not work. Manually, change the settings. [[:File:Thunderbird-3.png|[3]]]
{| class="prettytable"
!
!Server Hostname
!Port
!SSL
!Authentication
|-
|IMAP||imap.cs.umbc.edu||993||SSL/TLS||Normal Password
|-
|SMTP||smtp.cs.umbc.edu||587||STARTLS||Normal Password
|}

If the 'Done' box becomes grayed out, click in one of the 'Authentication' boxes and select 'Normal Password' again. This should re-enable the button.

Email is now set up--check for new messages by clicking the "Get Mail" button.
=== Adding LDAP support ===
Adding LDAP support allows Thunderbird to auto-complete email address of people who are in the UMBC system.
# Access the menu, the three horizontal bars in the upper right -> preferences -> preferences [[:File:Thunderbird-ldap-1.png|[1]]]
# Select the "Composition" tab and then the "Addressing" sub-tab. Click on "Edit Directories..." [[:File:Thunderbird-ldap-2.png |[2]]]
# Enter "directory.umbc.edu" in the "Server Name" field [[:File:outlook-ldap-4.png|[4]]]
# Click "Next"
# When it tells you that "You must restart Outlook for these changes to take effect" click "OK"
# Click "Finish"
That's its, you are all set up for LDAP.

<gallery>
File: outlook-ldap-1.png | Accessing the Account Settings
File: outlook-ldap-4.png | Information to enter
</gallery>

==Alpine==
Alpine's default access method uses direct access to your mail spool in /var/mail. A bug in Linux prevents this from actually working. The solution is to manually configure alpine to use IMAP.

Edit the line beginning with inbox-path= and the line beginning with folder-collections= in ~/.pinerc (replace USERNAME with your UMBC username):
inbox-path={imap.cs.umbc.edu/user=USERNAME/ssl/NoRsh/IMAP}inbox
folder-collections=Mail {imap.cs.umbc.edu/user=USERNAME/ssl/NoRsh}[]

Alpine can also use the UMBC LDAP server to search for names and email addresses. This support can be added by editing the line beginning with ldap-servers= in ~/.pinerc (this is all one line):
ldap-servers=directory.umbc.edu:389 "/base=dc=umbc,dc=edu/binddn=/impl=0/rhs=0/ref=0/nosub=0/tls=0/tlsm=0/type=/srch=/time=/size=/cust=/nick=/matr=/catr=/satr=/gatr="

Every time alpine is run, a prompt will ask for your password to be entered.

# Using PHP on CSEE web servers is the same as using any other CGI langauge such as Perl. Review the instructions at the [[CGI|CSEE CGI Guide]] to become familiar with using CGI.
# Create your PHP file (make sure it has a .cgi extension), e.g. /web/userpages/''username''/filename.cgi)
# The first line of that file should read:

#!/usr/bin/php

# Write your PHP script. See the example above.
* Indentation shows inclusion, such as csee-grad, is defined as the union of '''csee-grad-cs''', '''csee-grad-ce''', and '''csee-grad-ee'''. So, if you are a graduate student in the CS program, you have been explicitly subscribed to '''csee-grad-cs''' and will by implicitly included in the lists csee-grad, csee-student and csee. Attention Graduate Students:

The CSEE Department maintains a number of electronic mailing lists. These are used to disseminate official announcements as well as to support various research groups. It is each graduate student's responsibility to subscribe to the mailing list that is relevant to their major: '''csee-grad-cs''', '''csee-grad-ce''', or '''csee-grad-ee'''. None of the other lists allow for self-subscriptions. Emails send to the parent lists csee-grad, csee-student, and csee will automatically propagate to the children lists csee-grad-cs, csee-grad-ce, and csee-grad-ee.

Notes
* You can add and remove yourself from these lists by the mechanism described below. Notify '''csee-listmaster''' AT '''csee''' DOT '''umbc''' DOT '''edu''' of any problems you can't resolve.
* Indentation shows inclusion, such as '''csee-grad''', is defined as the union of '''csee-grad-cs''', '''csee-grad-ce''', and '''csee-grad-ee'''. So, if you are a graduate student in the CS program, you have been explicitly subscribed to '''csee-grad-cs''' and will by implicitly included in the lists '''csee-student''' and '''csee'''. One can not subscribe to upper level lists.
* Lists (i.e. csee-undergrad-cs) have restictions on who is allowed to send mail through them (primarily because of their large size). Mail from unauthorized senders will be forwarded to the list administrator for approval.
* If you want to send mail to all CSEE graduate students, address it to '''csee-grad''' AT '''csee''' DOT '''umbc''' DOT '''edu'''.

Emails send to the parent lists csee-grad and csee will automatically propogate to the children lists csee-grad-cs, csee-grad-ce, and csee-grad-ee.

CSEE computer account users are allowed to request one MySQL database. You may request any alphanumeric string as the name of your database, but if someone else has already taken that name they have precedence. The string you give is prepended with "user_", so if you request the database "foo" and nobody has taken it, you will be granted a database by the name "user_foo". We suggest that you pick a name that describes the purpose of your database rather than who owns it, although there is no prohibition on picking, say, your own username as a database name. However, if you're doing a group project, it may be a better idea to pick something related to the project, so if you graduate and someone else takes over the project, the name of the database will be sensible. It should be noted that disk space on the database server is at a premium and maximum database size is limited as measured in megabytes. Databases that grow too large in size will be asked to be migrated elsewhere.

To get a CSEE database account, submit a ticket through the standard interface at [https://my.cs.umbc.edu my.cs.umbc.edu]. Please state that you want a database and what name you want for it.

Once you've been granted a CSEE database account, you can connect to it at db1.cs.umbc.edu on port 3306 (the standard port for MySQL), your UMBC username, and the password that you'll be given via email.
