Updating Java Guide

This guide will tell you how to easily update Java to the latest version on Windows XP.


  • Finding the Current version of Java installed on your system
    • Go to www.java.com. Where it says
    • Java Software Free Download, Click on Verify Installation.
    • Click on the Verify Installation Button. This will tell
    • you if you already have the latest version installed.
  • Updating and/or Installing Java online
    • If you need to update Java or you want to install it from scratch you may do so via the website.
    • Goto www.java.com.
    • Where it says Java Software Free Download,
    • Click on Download Now
    • Follow the directions on screen to finish your Java
    • installation.
  • Uninstalling and Removing older versions of Java
    • You may wish to uninstall the older versions of Java from your machine.
    • Goto Start, then Control Panel, then to Add or Remove Programs.
    • Find all of the older versions of Java listed and Remove the ones you don't want.
  • Java JRE 1.6
    • If you want to try using Java 1.6 you have to manually install it.
    • Goto www.java.com, under where it says Java
    • Software Download, click on Manual Download.
    • Near the top click on Download other Java software versions.
    • Where it says Newer Versions, Click on the link to http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/
    • Find where it says Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6, and click on the Download Now button to download and install.
    • Click on Installation Instructions and then windows for help installing Java 1.6
  • Java JRE 1.4
    • If you wish to keep using the older 1.4 JRE you should still update it to the latest version of 1.4
    • Goto www.java.com, under where it says Java Software Download, click on Manual Download.
    • Near the top click on Download other Java software versions.
    • Under where it says Older Versions, click on Archive Java Technology Products Download
    • On this page find J2SDK/J2RE - 1.4, Select the latest version in the dropdown menu, and click on Go.
    • Under where it says J2RE 1.4, Click on Download J2RE to download and install Java,
    • Click on Installation Instructions and then click on J2RE for Windows for help with the install.
